ABSTRACT

The Peruvian Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (RPGO, for its acronym in Spanish) has obtained its inclusion in the important Scopus database. A quick review of the journal's publication recalls the editorial dedication of its six editors, four of whom had just recently chaired the Peruvian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG, for its acronym in Spanish). The initial editorial work was carried out manually, on typewriters and continuously visiting the printing press, as well as the sponsors. The commitment of the SPOG Steering Committees to finance the publication and distribution of the issues allowed the gradual indexing to local, regional and international databases. Its internalization was expanded since the publication of the RPGO in the Open Journal Systems (OJS), a computer system where articles are published with punctuality, quality, including their editorial characteristics and the Information for Authors. Now the publication is only virtual, in English and Spanish, with visibility and impact of the articles since the beginning of the RPGO in 1955. With updated OJS data on the RPGO, the number of monthly visits to the abstracts reaches up to 10 thousand and monthly downloads of articles in PDF format reach more than 9 thousand. And, in the field of obstetrics and gynecology scientific journals in Latin America and Spain in Scopus, the h index of the RPGO by Google Scholar Metrics stands out as one of the best. At present, and facing future challenges, the activity of the RPGO has been strengthened, establishing an editorial team and tools that allow the already initiated professionalization of the processes of the editorial activity.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY Introduction: Scientific journals are the perfect instrument to communicate results of the research process and transmit knowledge. The editorial board is a team of experts of vital importance in the operation of a scientific journal, however, a frequent editorial practice is the publication of manuscripts in the journals they edit; therefore, we sought to determine the frequency of editorial inbreeding in Peruvian journals in the health area. Methods: A review of the articles published by members of the editorial board of 26 Peruvian journals between 2016 and 2019 was performed, evaluating the manuscripts from the editorial board, as well as analysis of association between the status of indexation in two regional databases and how this influences the frequency of inbreeding in each journal. Results: During the period evaluated, 2885 manuscripts were published, of which 520 had authors of the editorial board as authors. The most frequent type of contribution was the original article. Inbreeding in the years 2016 to 2018, as well as a higher percentage of inbreeding per issue, was statistically higher in the journals belonging to the Latindex directory. Conclusion: Peruvian journals in the health area have heterogeneous frequencies of editorial inbreeding. The journals included in the Latindex directory present higher frequency in editorial inbreeding, compared to journals included in the SciELO-Peru database.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To quantify, characterize and analyze e-mail from predatory journals (PJ) received by an academic in dentistry. Materials and methods: E-mails received in 2019 and suspected of being potentially predatory were pre-selected. The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) checklist was applied to identify the suspected biomedical PJ, including the following criteria: article processing charge (APC), fake impact factor, the journal being listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). We also extracted information on the lack of an impact factor on Journal Citations Reports, non-journal affiliated contact e-mail address, flattering language, article and/or personal citation, unsubscribe link, being listed in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) current catalog and indexed on Medline. Results: A total of 2,812 unsolicited suspected e-mails were received, and 1,837 requested some sort of manuscript; among these, 1,751 met some of the OHRI criteria. Less than half (780/1,837, 42%) referred to some area of dentistry. The median APC was US$399. A false impact factor was mentioned in 11% (201/1,837) of the e-mails, and 27% (504/1,837) corresponded to journals currently listed in the NLM catalog. Journals listed in DOAJ and COPE sent 89 e-mails. Conclusions: The email campaign from PJ was high and recurrent. Researchers should be well informed about PJ' modus operandi to protect their own reputation as authors and that of science.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this article is to present a description and analysis of the scientific production in Epidemiology of the Journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva since its creation in 1996. The titles and abstracts of all articles published in three periods (1996 to 2002, 2011 and 2019) were read and those related to Epidemiology were analyzed. These publications were classified according to the thematic area, study design, sampling method and sample size, and place of origin of the first author. The percentage of epidemiological articles published in the journal jumped from 12.8% in the first period to 31.0% in 2011, and to 55.3% in 2019. The most studied topics were chronic non-communicable diseases (20.3%), nutritional epidemiology (12.2%) and evaluation of health systems, policies, programs and services (10.9%). Descriptive/cross-sectional studies, conducted among adults and from the Southeast region, predominated. The results indicate the need for greater participation of cohort studies, case-control and clinical trials in the scope of the journal's publications, in addition to articles that use more sophisticated statistical methods and well-defined theoretical models, which may contribute in a more relevant way to prevention and control of health problems.

ABSTRACT

Young authors may benefit by some advices on how to proceed when they decide to write a manuscript and submit it to a medical journal. They should start by selecting the journal considering the topic and nature of their study, how relevant the results seem and the interest it may have in editors and readers. A reasonable choice should consider new journals that publish good papers selected after external peer review. Then they should study and follow the Instructions to Authors of the chosen journal. A strong call is given to recognize and avoid "predatory journals". Specific statements refer to Instructions to Authors and language requirements by the journal, the need to follow "ICMJE Recommendations", the correct assignment of authorship, and a strict observance of ethical regulations in biomedical and clinical research. Special mention is given to provide a good abstract, in English, either descriptive or structured depending on the nature of their study. These advices may be useful as well as a reminder to older authors on how to improve their manuscripts before submitting them to a mainstream medical journal.
